"If There Be
Pain, All u need 2 do is call on me 2 Be with u"- 2Pac
When I was in middle
school I had a crush on this boy. He never paid much attention to me. I
remember listening to love songs and writing sappy love poems for him, though I never had the courage to give them to him, but I would show my
friends. We would all "ooo" and "aaaah" over them. I think
this was the first time that I started to write and enjoy love poems. I look
back on this now, and I just laugh at how cute and innocent I was.
Writing is a form of
expressing how you feel and feelings about love or romance are seen a lot
through poems or song lyrics. In his "If There be Pain" poem, Tupac
writes about the support he can provide if his lover is in
pain. I interpret this poem as being written for a romantic lover, but can also be dedicated to a family member. Tupac is
demonstrating how much he cares for this person. He puts love first,
and assures that love CAN and WILL conquer all. "If
There be Pain" is a poem that I think many of us can relate too. In middle
school I thought I knew what love was or even meant. Back then, I
could have bet my life that my feelings were the same as the
ones in this poem. I eventually realized that
I was completely wrong. Now that I am older I have truly experienced what love
is. I experienced love first hand when I had my son. The moment I looked into
his eyes, I knew I would do anything for him so he would never feel pain. When
you love someone you want to do everything for them. The same feeling Tupac
writes about in this poem is exactly how I feel towards my loved ones.
I think the connection you have with this poem is so heart warming. Seeing how your ideas about love have evolved over the course of your life and how situations changed your perspective on what the poem meant to you was really great to read about. I love that you added the photo of the poem alongside your interpretation, it was nice getting to read it for myself.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the poem feels like it's meant for a very close family member. When I read it, I instantly thought of my sister and how the words conveyed how much I care for her. Something interesting I've noticed as I've been reading through your posts is the way Tupac uses "2" in place of "to" and "u" in place of "you." I know this is an artistic choice, but I'm wondering why he chose to do it that way. Do you know?
I can relate to a lot of what Tupac put down, but sometimes it is hard to manifest what you feel in a language other than poetry or art. You have a great way of explaining your own experiences as parallels to not only what Tupac wrote about, but what other people feel on the day to day. Well done.

ReplyDeleteI have never written a poem to express my love for someone; or even to just express my feelings. But reading this post made me think I should try. The only poems I know really well are the ones by Shel Silverstein which are fantastic but not the deepest. Seeing what you wrote about 2pac reminds me just how powerful poems can be.
ReplyDeleteInteresting posts. I've never really listened to Tupac but the lyrics and how you relate them to your experiences give me a sense that he writes about issues most of us can relate to. I've heard a lot of positive stuff about his music. I should really give him a listen for a change.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nick. You did a good job of expressing your feelings to the words of Tupac. I remember doing an essay about Tupacs poem but I dont think i was able to convey the message as well as you did here. This was very well written and you did a great job.
